Massive protests have erupted across Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) as residents voice their frustration over soaring electricity tariffs and wheat prices. What began as local demonstrations in Rawalakot has now grown into a large-scale movement spreading to other towns, driven by growing economic distress.
⚡ Electricity Tariffs Spark Outrage
Despite AJK contributing around 3,000 megawatts to Pakistan’s power grid—nearly a third of the nation’s total generation—residents are reportedly charged PKR 30 per unit for electricity. With a production cost as low as PKR 2, this stark disparity has led to region-wide boycotts of electricity bills and increasing public anger.
🌾 Wheat Price Hikes Add to Economic Strain
The cost of subsidized wheat has also surged, especially in Gilgit-Baltistan, where prices jumped from PKR 20 to PKR 36 per kilogram, with projections of rising further to PKR 52. This inflation has significantly increased food insecurity for many families already struggling with high utility bills.
🪧 Key Demands by Protesters
The movement, spearheaded by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), has issued a list of ten demands:
- Wheat subsidies equal to those in Gilgit-Baltistan
- Electricity pricing based on actual local production costs
- Removal of excessive privileges for government officials
- Restoration of student union activities and elections
- Increased budgetary power for municipal institutions
Notably, JAAC emphasizes this is not a separatist movement but a call for fair economic governance and regional equity.
🚨 Government Response and Tensions
The federal government has responded by deploying 600 personnel from the Punjab Constabulary to control the situation. Tensions remain high as protesters continue their long march to Muzaffarabad, with negotiations underway but no resolution in sight.
